Susan Curtis

Susan G. Curtis joined Blake & Uhlig in 2022. Ms. Curtis has an extensive employee benefits and executive compensation background that includes advising clients on tax qualified defined benefit and defined contribution plans, including governmental, multiemployer and single employer plans, as well as 403(b) and 457 plans. Her experience includes drafting plan documents, qualifying plans with the IRS and ensuring their continued compliance with applicable statutes and regulations.

Ms. Curtis assists clients with legal issues relating to pension plans and self-insured health plans. She provides legal advice to clients as to ERISA, the Affordable Care Act, HIPAA and mental health parity compliance, plan design issues and health benefit claims.

Ms. Curtis has worked on withdrawal liability matters, including settlement of claims for withdrawal liability and enforcement of withdrawal liability awards in arbitration. She has also represented multiemployer funds in collection and fiduciary litigation under ERISA.

Ms. Curtis has assisted multiemployer funds in designing monitoring programs to assure the funds are receiving contractually required contributions.

Ms. Curtis has formed, and applied for tax-exempt status for, various types of tax-exempt organizations, including 501(c)(3)s, and advises tax-exempt organizations on ongoing legal matters, including maintaining their tax-exempt status.

Prior to joining Blake & Uhlig, Ms. Curtis worked as an associate, counsel and partner at law firms in the employee benefits and executive compensation area. She also served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Law at New York University Law School for several years.
